MALE’, Maldives —  The Maldives’ Deputy Prosecutor General, Ali Sameer, resigned from his position on Sunday.

Mr. Sameer, who confirmed his departure to local media outlets, did not specify the reasons behind his decision.

Prior to his role as Deputy Prosecutor General, Mr. Sameer served as the Chief Justice of the High Court, during which time the present Prosecutor General, Mr. Abbas Shareef, was a Puisne Judge.

His appointment as Deputy Prosecutor General by then-Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem came just one month after stepping down from the High Court bench. Both Mr. Sameer and Mr. Shameem share educational ties to Al-Azhar University in Egypt, where they completed their legal studies.

Mr. Sameer’s legal credentials include a degree in Sharia and Law from Al-Azhar University and a master’s in Comparative Law from the International Islamic University in Malaysia. During his tenure on the High Court bench, he presided over several high-profile criminal and constitutional cases.

He left the High Court after the Judicial Service Commission began investigating the allocation of social housing flats to High Court justices at a reduced rate by then-President Yameen Abdul Gayoom.
