Maldives Rebukes Envoy’s Unauthorized Meeting With Taliban Official in Pakistan

1 min read

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — The government of the Maldives announced it has taken disciplinary measures following an unauthorized meeting between its high commissioner in Pakistan and a representative of the Taliban. The meeting, which was not sanctioned by Malé, has raised concerns about diplomatic training and adherence to protocol within Maldivian foreign posts.

The High Commissioner’s interaction with the Taliban official came without prior approval or consultation with headquarters, a misstep that prompted swift action from the Maldivian government.

In a statement issued Sunday, the Foreign Ministry reiterated its commitment to recognizing the Afghan government represented at the United Nations as the sole legitimate authority of Afghanistan, a stance aligned with broader United Nations protocols.

This incident has drawn attention to the question of adequate training for diplomats assigned to foreign posts and whether career diplomats, particularly from within the Maldivian Foreign Service, are being deployed in critical diplomatic roles.
