Scheduled seaplane services to Thoddoo officially commenced today, fulfilling a promise President Dr Mohamed Muizzu made during a visit to the island in August last year. At the time, the President pledged that a seaplane platform would be built and regular flights would begin by February.
The national airline, Maldivian, launched the service at a ceremony attended by the Minister of Dhivehi Language, Culture and Heritage, Adam Naseer, who is originally from Thoddoo.
Maldivian’s Deputy Managing Director, Ali Saleem, said the airline would operate uninterrupted services to the island and increase flight frequency in line with demand.
Flights will run every Thursday and Saturday. The airline has introduced a special one‑way fare for the route.
Saleem said the launch was part of the airline’s broader effort to deliver on commitments made by President Muizzu, including improved connectivity for residential islands and key tourism destinations.
Thoddoo, a thriving hub for guesthouse tourism, is expected to benefit significantly from the new service, which will offer faster access for both residents and visitors.
Maldivian began expanding its seaplane network on 11 September last year, with the first route launched to B. Kamadhoo. Since then, the airline has added services to several islands, including Fulhadhoo, Fehendhoo, Goidhoo in Baa and, most recently, N. Velidhoo.
