The first batch of electric vehicles for the new Malé Taxi Line has arrived in Hulhumalé port, marking a major step in the government’s plan to introduce a cleaner, more reliable transport service across the capital.

MTCC confirmed the shipment’s arrival on X, noting that Minister of Transport Mohamed Ameen and MTCC Managing Director, DCP (Retd.) Ahmed Saudee, visited Hulhumalé Port to oversee the clearance process. The company described the project as a “much‑needed transport service” and said it remains committed to offering a safe and convenient mobility option for residents.

A total of 60 vehicles have been brought in for the first phase. The government aims to launch the service with 150 cars, with the remaining 90 expected to arrive on the 28th of this month. Three vehicle models will be used in the fleet, one sourced from Thailand and two from China. All are electric, aligning with the administration’s push for environmentally friendly transport.

MTCC has begun preparations for staffing the service, with plans to recruit 407 drivers. Of these, 122 will be full‑time employees. The taxi line will operate around the clock, supported by a dedicated mobile application and a hotline number, 1655.
