The Maldives has issued a strong condemnation of Iran’s recent attacks targeting Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman and Jordan, warning that the escalation threatens regional stability at a moment of already heightened geopolitical tension.

Speaking at the 44th meeting of the 61st session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Permanent Representative Dr Salma Rasheed said the Maldives remains “deeply concerned” by the widening military confrontation in the Gulf. She stressed that the indiscriminate nature of the attacks poses grave humanitarian and economic risks for the wider region.

Dr Rasheed also noted the Maldives’ concern over the retaliatory military actions carried out by Israel and the United States against Iran, underscoring that the cycle of strikes is pushing the region further from dialogue and closer to prolonged instability.

The Maldives urged the international community to intensify diplomatic engagement aimed at securing an immediate ceasefire. “Peace, stability and security in the region must be restored without delay,” Dr Rasheed said, emphasising that the Gulf’s interconnected economies and shipping routes make the consequences of escalation far‑reaching.

The Maldives has co‑sponsored a resolution titled Human rights implications of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s unprovoked attacks against Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Jordan, tabled during the Council’s urgent debate. The resolution seeks to document the human rights impact of the attacks and calls for accountability mechanisms to be strengthened.

Diplomatic observers note that Malé’s position aligns closely with that of Gulf Cooperation Council states, reflecting the Maldives’ long‑standing security partnerships in the region. The government has consistently supported multilateral efforts to safeguard maritime routes, energy infrastructure and civilian populations from the spillover effects of regional conflict.

With tensions in the Gulf showing no immediate signs of easing, the Maldives’ intervention in Geneva signals its intention to remain an active voice in international forums calling for restraint, humanitarian protection and renewed diplomatic channels.
