President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has submitted a prioritized list of nominees to Majlis for an upcoming vacancy at the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM), placing Shammoon Hameed at the top.

The seat is opening up as current HRCM member Samaau Ahmed Najeeb approaches the end of her term.

Among the candidates who applied during the public call, President Muizzu selected two names to send for parliamentary approval. H. Meenaz, Shammoon Hameed—who previously served as the Commission’s Secretary General—was ranked as the primary pick. Current member Samaau Ahmed Najeeb was also included on the list as the second option for potential reappointment.

The nominations have now been forwarded to the relevant committee for review.

Shammoon brings extensive state service experience to the nomination, having previously held senior positions including Permanent Secretary at the Heritage Ministry and head of the National Centre for the Arts (NCA).

He is the son of the late Abdulla Hameed, who served as Senior Minister and Majlis Speaker under former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, and the brother of Presidential Advisor on National Planning Hamdhoon Hameed.
