A video circulating on social media this week raised public concern after claiming that several individuals were living under the Sinamalé Bridge. The footage prompted immediate questions from residents, including pointed criticism about police visibility and patrols in the capital.

Police confirmed today that officers searched the area following the report and found that some individuals had indeed been using the space. The institution said it is now working with relevant authorities to take the necessary measures to prevent the area from being used in this manner.

Police also urged the public to report similar incidents without delay so that officers can respond promptly.

The incident has reignited debate about public safety and national security preparedness. In a country surrounded by open sea and with critical infrastructure concentrated in a small geographic area, many citizens are asking whether authorities should be more vigilant and proactive in monitoring sensitive locations.

Police presence in the capital is at times nearly invisible. Full‑fledged police stations operate across Malé, yet officers are often seen only in designated rest or recreation spots, such as the shaded area near the Sinamalé flats. A former police officer told this publication that visibility must improve and that a neighbourhood‑policing model, similar to the one used in China, would be better suited for the city.
