Male’ — Former President Mohamed Nasheed has raised public concern after failing to receive an invitation to the official state ceremony marking the country’s 61st independence anniversary.

Taking to social media platform X, Nasheed remarked that this marks the absolute first occasion since his early school days that he has been left off the guest list for an official Independence Day event. He pointedly highlighted that even during periods when he was incarcerated, invitations to such national observances were extended to him.

“This is the first time since I entered school that I have not been invited to an official Independence Day function. Even when I was imprisoned in the past, invitations to such events were provided.” Nasheed

The high-profile ceremony, held at the Social Centre to commemorate the nation’s independence, was attended by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef, ministers, foreign ambassadors, and veteran public servants alongside various other dignitaries.

During the event, the state formally recognised individuals who have rendered long-standing service to national development. Four figures were conferred the prestigious title of the Order of the Distinguished Rule of Izzuddin (Nishan Izzuddin), while 66 others received service badges and commemorative plaques for extended contributions to the state.
