MALE’ — The National Centre for Cultural Heritage has officially opened applications for its “Signature Research Scholarship,” a specialised programme designed to deepen the academic understanding and preservation of the archipelago’s unique cultural identity.
The initiative offers a dual opportunity: successful candidates will enrol in a Master’s degree programme at the Islamic University of Maldives (IUM) while simultaneously conducting a sponsored research project under the auspices of the National Centre.
Officials at the Centre stated that the programme is intended to address a critical need for rigorous documentation of Maldivian traditions, while simultaneously nurturing a new cohort of skilled heritage scholars.
Programme Requirements and Support:
- Duration: The research tenure is set for two years.
- Engagement: To ensure close collaboration with the Centre’s ongoing initiatives, scholars will be required to work on-site at the National Centre for two days each month.
- Research Scope: Unlike traditional open-ended scholarships, the specific themes and subjects for research will be determined and assigned by the National Centre to ensure alignment with national preservation priorities.
- Funding: The Centre will provide comprehensive financial support, covering the full tuition fees for the Master’s degree and providing dedicated research facilities for the duration of the scholarship.
The National Centre has set a deadline for applications for 14:00 on Thursday, 23 July.
The scholarship represents a significant state-led investment in the nation’s cultural narrative. By bridging the gap between formal postgraduate education and institutional research, the government hopes to build a more robust, evidence-based framework for protecting the history and traditions that define the Maldivian identity.
