PNC Emerges as Clear Leader in Local Council Elections With Highest Number of Seats

The ruling PNC has emerged as the strongest political force in the local council and women’s development committee elections held on the 4th of this month, securing the highest number of seats nationwide. Official results released by the Election Commission today show the PNC winning a total of 584 seats, reaffirming the party’s organisational strength and broad support across the islands.

According to the Election Commission, the PNC won 280 council seats, including five seats in city councils, 75 island council president seats, 101 seats reserved for women and 99 general seats. The party also secured 304 seats in women’s development committees, covering both chairpersons and members. The PNC won the most seats in every constituency except five cities, underscoring its dominance across the country.

The opposition MDP won a total of 563 seats, including five mayoral seats, 41 city council seats, 73 island council president seats, 88 seats reserved for women and 82 general seats. A total of 664 candidates contested on the PNC ticket.

Among other parties, the MDA won 23 seats, including four island council president seats and several women’s committee positions. The Adhaalath Party won six seats, the Jumhooree Party won four, and the Democrats secured two seats.

Independent candidates also performed strongly, with 91 independents elected to councils and 78 independents elected to women’s development committees.

The results place the PNC firmly ahead of all other parties in terms of total seats won, giving the ruling party a clear advantage in local governance and community‑level decision making across the Maldives.
