MALÉ — President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has decided to cancel the traditional official reception held to mark the Maldives’ Independence Day, the President’s Office announced, as the administration implements new measures to rein in state expenditure.
Instead of the customary gala, the official ceremony for the holiday on 26 July will take place at 9:00 a.m. at the Social Centre, where President Muizzu is scheduled to deliver an address to the nation.
The belt-tightening measures echo decisions made during the president’s first year in office in 2024, when he announced a series of austerity cuts to manage the country’s financial situation, including reducing political appointments and scrapping that year’s Independence Day festivities.
However, the state took a vastly different approach last year to mark the milestone 60th anniversary of Maldivian independence from the British Empire. The diamond jubilee was celebrated with considerable pageantry, with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi attending as the guest of honour.
