MALE’ — President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has declared his support for Argentina ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026, which kicks off on Thursday night, adding that England would be his second choice if Argentina exit the tournament.
“I have been an Argentina supporter since I was very young,” President Muizzu said, speaking alongside Youth, Sports and Fitness Minister Raafiu. His support for Argentina, he said, dates to his admiration for Diego Maradona.
England came into the picture later. President Muizzu said he began following the English national side during his years studying in the United Kingdom.
He is also a devoted Manchester United fan, though he acknowledged that the match schedule means he will not be able to watch every game. He said he would clear time for the important ones. Asked for his predictions, he pointed to France as a strong contender and suggested the Netherlands could surprise.
“France are very strong. Holland might just win it,” he said.
On the sidelines of the conversation, the president signed a set of official World Cup match balls that the ministry plans to present to Maldivian football legends. Minister Raafiu had decided the balls should carry the president’s signature before being handed over.
The ministry said it is working with various parties to set up public viewing arrangements so fans across the country can watch matches together. President Muizzu expressed hope that the arrangements would extend to as many people as possible, particularly young Maldivians.
The World Cup runs from 11 June to 19 July, spread across 16 venues in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
