President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has marked Commonwealth Day with a call for deeper cooperation across the organisation, placing climate resilience, concessional financing and sustainable debt solutions at the centre of the Maldives’ priorities.

In his message, the President said the Commonwealth has long shown the value of unity in protecting peace, promoting good governance and advancing sustainable development. He noted that this year’s theme, Unlocking Opportunities Together for a Prosperous Commonwealth, reflects the collective resolve needed to confront global challenges.

For the Maldives, he said, the theme aligns closely with national goals. He highlighted climate resilience, education mobility, sustainable tourism and digitalisation as areas where cooperation can deliver real gains for communities across the islands. As a leading small island developing state, he added, the Maldives remains vulnerable to climate impacts and external economic shocks, making fair access to financing essential.

Marking the 77th anniversary of the Commonwealth, President Muizzu reaffirmed the Maldives’ commitment to ensuring that every member state, regardless of size, can thrive. He said the upcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting will offer an important opportunity to renew shared commitments and push for outcomes that strengthen the wider Commonwealth family.

Foreign Minister Dr Abdulla Khaleel, in a separate message, echoed the emphasis on unity. He described the Commonwealth as an important partner for small island developing countries and said its solidarity has been a source of stability during a period of global uncertainty. He noted that the organisation has supported Maldives with climate adaptation financing and continues to provide a platform for smaller nations to advance shared interests.

President Muizzu has maintained that the Maldives must play a more active role within the organisation, positioning climate resilience as a central pillar of his foreign policy. His message this year continues that line, underscoring the need for the Commonwealth to deliver practical outcomes for nations most exposed to rising seas and economic shocks.
