President Dr. Mohammed Muizzu said there is no intention of holding talks with the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party. He made the remarks at a press conference held today at the President’s Office.

Asked by a journalist whether he would open discussions with the MDP, President Muizzu said such talks would go against the five year sovereign mandate given to him by the people. He said the public had entrusted him with full authority and responsibility to run the country.

“It was not entrusted to consult with other parties,” he said.

President Muizzu said he would continue to carry out the responsibilities placed on him by voters and proceed with the work of the administration.

His comments come as the opposition has intensified its criticism of the government following the local council and women’s development committee elections held on the fourth of this month.

The MDP has launched a series of street protests calling for 12 demands and seeking changes. The government maintains that these demands are unwarranted and that there is no governance issue that requires such measures. The rallies, which began on Wednesday night, have drawn supporters from both the MDP and the People’s National Front led by former president Abdullah Yameen. Activists from both parties have joined together in the demonstrations.
