President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said the Government will submit a bill to the People’s Majlis during the current session to enable the implementation of capital punishment.

He made the remarks at a press briefing held today at the President’s Office.

The President said that, as the Head of State of a fully Muslim nation, it is not within his discretion to withhold the enforcement of sentences issued after all stages of the judicial process have been completed. He added that the Government believes the legal framework must be strengthened to ensure the process is clear, consistent and enforceable.

He confirmed that once the bill is passed by the Majlis and ratified, the Administration will move ahead with implementing capital punishment for cases that have reached finality and meet all legal requirements.

President Muizzu said he considers these measures necessary for the Maldives, as an Islamic nation, to uphold justice and ensure social equity.
