MALE’, — In a landmark milestone for the nation’s healthcare sector, 16 newly trained Maldivian physicians have officially joined the ranks of the country’s primary public healthcare facilities, Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) and Dharumavantha Hospital.

The Male’ City Group of Hospitals (MCGH) confirmed that the cohort includes highly specialized practitioners introducing critical sub-specialties to the Maldives for the very first time.

The addition of these local specialists expands diagnostic and treatment capabilities directly within the country.

Among the newly introduced fields are:

  • Neuro-Interventional Radiology
  • Clinical Hematology
  • Pediatric Dentistry
  • Neonatology

In addition to these pioneering roles, the hospitals welcomed new specialists across essential departments, including orthopedics, internal medicine, neurology, general radiology, ENT, gastroenterology, plastic surgery, vascular surgery, and pulmonology.

Ibrahim Abdul Razzaq Haleem, Chief Executive Officer of MCGH, highlighted that expanding the specialized workforce aligns directly with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s vision to strengthen local health infrastructure.

“This marks a major step forward in reducing our reliance on foreign medical treatment,” Haleem stated on social media.

Furthermore, MCGH announced plans to roll out enhanced cardiology and neurology services later this year, alongside establishing full-scale cardiothoracic and vascular surgery and interventional radiology programs.

Haleem expressed gratitude to hospital staff and urged all healthcare workers to maintain high standards of patient care and compassion as the facilities expand their clinical capabilities.
