Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has decided to contest the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) primary ahead of the 2028 presidential election.
Sources confirm Solih made the call yesterday following high-level discussions with senior MDP figures. While the decision is made, the former president is yet to make a formal public announcement.
The move sets up a high-stakes internal showdown for the opposition ticket.
So far, former Economic Minister and MDP Chairperson Faiyaz Ismail is the only candidate to officially declare his candidacy. However, former Foreign Minister and current MDP President Abdulla Shahid is widely rumoured to be throwing his hat in the ring, reportedly holding private consultations with key party figures in recent weeks.
Former Vice President Faisal Naseem has also voiced interest in securing the party’s presidential ticket, confirming he is working toward a run.
Solih’s return to the primary arena marks his first major bid since the fierce 2023 MDP primary, where he defeated former President Mohamed Nasheed by a comfortable margin. Solih ultimately lost the 2023 presidential election to President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.
