Sun Siyam Resorts founder, chairman, and managing director Ahmed Siyam Mohamed officially launched construction on Sunday for the “Sun Siyam Sports Complex” in his native island of N. Kudafari.
The ground-breaking ceremony at the island’s football ground brought together People’s Majlis member for Velidhoo constituency Mohamed Abbas, Kudafari Council President Ahmed Mahfaooz, local council members, representatives from the Women’s Development Committee (WDC), and a large turnout of island residents.
During the event, students from the Kudafari Sports Academy presented a commemorative plaque to Ahmed Siyam in recognition of his continued contributions to the island’s development.
A Colorful Tycoon’s Deep Roots and Expanding Footprint
The project highlights the distinctive profile of Ahmed Siyam Mohamed—often viewed in local political and social media circles as a colorful, alternative figure to mainstream political leaders.
Over decades, Siyam has carved out a business and media empire that closely mirrors the path of Villa Group chairman Qasim Ibrahim, both having built power bases on luxury resorts and media operations (with Qasim extending his reach into aviation and regional airport infrastructure).
It also comes as a new wave of Maldivian resort moguls, such as Mohamed Ali Janah, forge different paths—exemplified by Janah’s venture into commercial banking through the launch of Maldives Premier Bank.
For Siyam, who continues to lead the Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) while serving as MP for Dh. Meedhoo, projects like the Kudafari complex reinforce his community-first presence in his home atoll. His personal investments in Kudafari extend far beyond sports: earlier this year, Siyam inaugurated Masjid Muhammadh Qasim, a harbourfront traveller’s mosque built at his personal expense in honor of his late father, designed in the style of Malé’s iconic Friday Mosque. It sits alongside Masjid Shameema Abdullah, a 700-capacity mosque he built in memory of his mother.
Whether through religious heritage projects or multi-million Rufiyaa sports infrastructure, Siyam’s steady stream of local developments keeps him firmly rooted in community affairs, solidifying his unique brand of influence across N. Atoll and the country.
