The government will host the first Addu Business Dialogue on 13 and 14 May, marking the start of a new series of regional economic forums aimed at strengthening development across the Maldives. Officials describe the event as an important step in expanding business opportunities in the south and creating a structured platform for engagement between the state and the private sector.

The forum will bring together businessmen, investors, policy makers and industry leaders to discuss the economic potential of Addu and the wider southern region. Minister of Economic Development, Transport and Trade Mohamed Saeed said the meeting will allow industry stakeholders to exchange information on available opportunities and incentives. He said the government intends to use the dialogue to identify practical ways to support businesses and encourage investment.

Addu has been highlighted as an area with strong prospects in tourism, fisheries, logistics and technology. Several government ministries, including Home Affairs, Fisheries, Tourism and Finance, are expected to take part in the discussions.

In his 2026 Presidential Statement, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced that special concessions for businesses operating in Addu will come into effect from 2027. The measures are designed to empower small and medium enterprises and stimulate economic activity in the south. Many businesses in the region have already expressed interest in joining the forum.

The Addu Business Dialogue is the first in a planned series of regional forums aimed at promoting balanced development across the Maldives. The government has said the initiative reflects its commitment to strengthening the national economy and improving the livelihoods of communities outside major urban centres.

President Muizzu has repeatedly stated that establishing urban hubs in different parts of the country and advancing regional development remain key policy priorities. Officials say the forum will give entrepreneurs a direct channel to engage with the government, raise concerns and identify new investment opportunities.
