IGMH Launches Laser Surgery Programme, Cutting Recovery Times for Four Common Procedures

Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital has begun performing operations using laser technology, starting with four procedures that previously required longer hospital stays and extended recovery periods.

The programme launched on Tuesday. The four procedures now being performed using laser technology are endovenous laser treatment for varicose veins, haemorrhoidoplasty for haemorrhoids, laser closure of anal fistula tracts, and laser closure of pilonidal sinus.

IGMH said that between 2023 and last year, a significant number of outpatient visits were by patients requiring treatment for these conditions. Surgery was available but came with drawbacks, including the need to cut larger areas of tissue, longer stays in hospital and higher risks of infection. Laser surgery addresses all three.

The benefits, the hospital said, include smaller surgical wounds, shorter hospitalisation and reduced risk of infection and complications.

IGMH Senior Consultant in Surgery Abdullah Ubaid said the programme will not stop at these four procedures. He said the hospital plans to expand laser surgery into plastic surgery as a next step.

The surgical team underwent training at hospitals in India before the programme began.

IGMH and Dharmavantha Hospital are both offering the procedures.
