BERLIN — When President Dr Mohamed Muizzu arrived at the snow-dusted gates of Schloss Bellevue on Wednesday, the ceremony carried more than just the usual weight of diplomatic protocol. The inspection of the Guard of Honour and the signing of the visitors’ book marked a historic first: the first time a Maldivian head of state has visited Germany at the formal invitation of its president.

The visit, spanning 9 to 13 February, arrives at a symbolic juncture. This year marks the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations, a partnership that has evolved from modest beginnings into a crucial link between the European heartland and the Indian Ocean.

Inside the presidential residence, President Muizzu and his German counterpart, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, led official talks aimed at modernising a decades-old bond. While the Maldives is often viewed through the narrow lens of luxury tourism, the discussions in Berlin suggested a desire for a broader partnership.

According to officials present at the talks, the two leaders focused on diversifying cooperation through formal agreements and increased high-level dialogue. The agenda moved beyond the beach, touching on bilateral and multilateral fronts where both nations find common ground.

The anniversary celebrations moved to a more festive setting on Wednesday evening, with an official reception in Berlin. The event brought together Maldivian delegates, German officials, and members of the diplomatic corps. In a nod to the Maldives’ primary export, a raffle draw offered lucky guests getaway stays at various Maldivian resorts and guesthouses.

However, the trip also had a domestic focus. President Muizzu made a point of meeting with the Maldivian diaspora living in Germany. During a private gathering, he told attendees that connecting with citizens abroad is a priority of his international travels. In a rare gesture of accessibility, the President held private conversations with several residents, allowing them to raise personal concerns or issues regarding life away from the nation.
