MALE’ — In a strategic move to upgrade the technical capacity of its workforce, the Bank of Maldives (BML) has entered into a long-term partnership with Malaysia’s INCEIF University. The agreement, executed via the BML Academy, aims to provide local banking professionals with access to globally accredited qualifications in Islamic finance.

Under the newly established framework, the national bank’s personnel will be eligible to enrol across a suite of international curricula developed by INCEIF. The training pathways encompass executive education modules, professional certifications, and specialised technical seminars tailored to contemporary sharia-compliant financial systems. beyond baseline instruction, the bilateral agreement introduces structured mechanisms for industry-wide data sharing, leadership development tracks, and broader institutional networking opportunities within regional financial ecosystems.

Centralising Human Capital in Sharia-Compliant Banking

The inclusion of an Islamic finance track addresses a critical skills gap in the domestic financial services sector, which has seen an escalating demand for sharia-compliant banking products over the past decade.

INCEIF University—originally founded by Bank Negara Malaysia (the Central Bank of Malaysia)—holds prestigious AACSB accreditation and operates as one of the few postgraduate universities worldwide completely dedicated to Islamic financial education. By leveraging this institutional link, BML aims to align its internal workforce capabilities with the regulatory and operational benchmarks maintained by mature Islamic financial hubs.

Expanding Global Academic Alliances

The deal marks the latest expansion for the BML Academy, an internal corporate training division established by the bank to standardize and elevate professional banking competencies within the Maldives.

The academy has increasingly relied on foreign academic partnerships to diversify its corporate training options. Prior to the INCEIF University agreement, BML concluded separate capacity-building pacts with:

  • The Asian Institute of Chartered Bankers (AICB): Focused on baseline compliance and core commercial banking credentials.

  • Singapore Management University (SMU): Targeted at executive management tracks and digital banking strategies.

Bank officials indicated that the continuing integration of global institutional curricula into BML’s corporate framework remains central to its strategy to modernise the country’s broader financial architecture and improve operational compliance across all tiers of the banking sector.
