MALÉ — The Bank of Maldives (BML) has achieved a significant global milestone by simultaneously inaugurating 90 new cash recycler ATMs, a feat the bank claims is unprecedented in the international banking sector.
The new network, comprising 70 US dollar-dispensing machines and 20 rufiyaa-dispensing machines, was officially launched by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu during a ceremony held this evening. The event was attended by BML’s Chairperson, Ahmed Ali Habeeb, the bank’s Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, as well as senior government officials.
The newly installed rufiyaa ATMs have been strategically placed in islands where the bank already operates established branches. The 70 dollar-dispensing machines have been distributed across a wide geographical span, reaching islands in 20 atolls—from Haa Alif in the north to Seenu in the south.
“To launch such a vast number of recycler ATMs at once is something no other bank in the world has done to date,” said BML’s CEO, Mohamed Shareef. “Therefore, this is a world record.”
In addition to the ATM expansion, President Muizzu inaugurated six new BML branches across the country, located in Hanimaadhoo (Haa Dhaalu Atoll), Thoddoo (Alif Alif Atoll), Vilufushi (Thaa Atoll), Hulhüdhoo (Seenu Atoll), Hitadhoo (Laamu Atoll), and Kulhudhuffushi (Haa Dhaalu Atoll). The branch in Kulhudhuffushi has been specifically designated as a business centre to cater to the needs of local enterprises. The bank confirmed that all new branches will be operational starting tomorrow.
Addressing the evolving nature of digital banking, Shareef emphasised that BML remains committed to maintaining a personal connection with its customers. He noted that the staff at these new branches would not be restricted to desk-bound roles.
“Their role is to visit households and businesses, and to travel to islands neighbouring the branch locations,” Shareef explained. “They will be providing information on our products and services, promoting financial literacy, and raising awareness about protection against scams.”
The CEO reiterated that despite the bank’s rapid transition towards digital infrastructure, BML is dedicated to ensuring that its services remain deeply accessible and community-focused.
