Former Attorney General Fathimath Diyana Saeed has said that both presidents who governed on behalf of the MDP previously supported holding two national elections on the same day.
In a post shared on X, Diyana referenced earlier statements by former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and former President Mohamed Nasheed, both of whom had publicly advocated for combining election days. She noted that the two leaders had long argued that holding presidential and parliamentary elections together would be in the best interest of the country.
Diyana’s remarks follow renewed debate over election scheduling. During a campaign event for the 19th parliamentary elections, Solih said the delay in the polls was due to the decision to hold the elections separately. His comments contrast with his earlier position, where he had supported simultaneous elections.
Nasheed has also consistently argued for holding two elections on the same day and reiterated that view in a recent post. Diyana pointed out that despite their earlier positions, both leaders later opposed the government’s decision when the proposal was formally put forward.
Several political parties, including the Congress, AP, JP and MDA, have expressed support for holding the presidential and parliamentary elections on the same day.
