MALE’, Maldives — Major General (Retired) Musa Ali Jaleel, a decorated former commander of the Maldives National Defence Force, has emerged as the sole candidate for the People’s National Congress (PNC) in the upcoming local council elections. Party officials confirmed that Jaleel will contest for the post of Mayor of Malé, positioning him as a central figure in the ruling party’s bid to consolidate control over the capital.

Ibrahim Falah, the PNC’s campaign manager and parliamentary group leader, told reporters that Jaleel was the only individual to submit nomination papers for the party’s ticket. “The candidate is indeed Musa Ali Jaleel,” Falah said, underscoring the party’s confidence in his candidacy.

Jaleel, who retired from active service with the rank of Major General, is widely respected for his decades-long military career. He was awarded the Nishan Askari, one of the nation’s highest honours, in recognition of his contributions to national security and sovereignty. His tenure in the defence forces included leadership roles during periods of heightened tension, and he has been credited with strengthening the Maldives’ defence infrastructure and international military cooperation.

The PNC, founded in 2019 and now the governing party under President Dr. Mohammed Muizzu, has sought to elevate figures with strong national credentials into political leadership. Jaleel’s candidacy reflects this strategy, drawing on his reputation as a disciplined leader and his close ties to the country’s security establishment.

Jaleel’s entry into politics comes at a time when the PNC is working to expand its base beyond the presidency and parliament. The mayoral race in Malé, the country’s most populous city and political hub, is seen as a critical test of the party’s ability to translate national power into local governance.

Jaleel’s military background may also resonate with voters concerned about public order and national sovereignty, themes that have featured prominently in President Muizzu’s administration. His candidacy is expected to be uncontested within the party, though the broader electoral landscape remains competitive, with opposition parties preparing to challenge the PNC’s dominance in urban councils.

Key Facts:

  • Musa Ali Jaleel is a retired Major General of the Maldives National Defence Force.
  • He has been awarded the Nishan Askari for distinguished military service.
  • He is the only candidate nominated by the PNC for Malé mayor in the upcoming local council elections.
  • The PNC, founded in 2019, is currently the ruling party under President Mohammed Muizzu.

This development positions Jaleel as a prominent figure in the PNC’s local election strategy, blending military prestige with political ambition in the heart of the Maldives’ capital.
