The current administration will carry out the death penalty, Minister of Homeland Security, Labour and Technology Ali Ihusan confirmed in Majlis today.

The Minister made the remarks during Tuesday’s parliamentary sitting in response to a question from MDP MP Hussain Sameel (Thoddoo constituency), who asked for an update on President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s campaign pledge to enforce capital punishment.

Minister Ihusan reiterated that capital punishment remains a firm government policy, though several legal steps must be completed before any executions can take place.

“Enforcing the death penalty is a policy of this government. We will do it,” Ihusan told MPs. “That is why we are currently drafting the necessary legislation to submit to this honorable Majlis.”

He added that alongside the legislative process, relevant authorities are making physical and operational preparations required for execution procedures.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has previously stated on record that his administration intends to enforce the death penalty in the Maldives, where a moratorium on capital punishment has been maintained for over seven decades.
