The fire that gutted the Green Building—which housed the Housing, Infrastructure, and Environment Ministries—was not arson, Home Minister Ali Ihusan told Majlis today.

Responding to a question from the Vaikaradhoo MP during today’s parliamentary session, Ihusan said Maldives Police Service has wrapped up its probe into the incident with help from foreign arson investigators. Findings so far show no signs that anyone set the place on fire intentionally.

“Our investigation doesn’t show this as a case where someone went in and torched the building. The fire started from an electrical issue. Bodycam footage from officers who first arrived on the scene clearly confirms the initial flames broke out in the wiring of the air conditioning units,” Ihusan said.

The minister added that police will hold a full press briefing soon to share detailed findings.

Ihusan noted that authorities are still calculating the exact financial damage and lost property, promising to release those numbers once assessment work finishes.
