Namkeen for the Masses, Rihanna for the Classes: Inside India’s Wedding of the Century

In a move that’s sure to make Marie Antoinette blush, India’s richest family, the Ambanis, are celebrating their son’s wedding by showering their employees with….. snacks. That’s right, folks.

While the guests at Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant’s nuptials are being treated to private Rihanna concerts and luxury cruises, the hardworking Reliance employees are unwrapping gift boxes containing four packets of Haldiram’s namkeen, a box of sweets, and a silver coin.

One can only imagine the excitement as these loyal workers open their red boxes, emblazoned with gold lettering, to find… packaged snacks. It’s as if Marie Antoinette herself had time-traveled to India, donned a sari, and proclaimed, “Let them eat namkeen!”

But wait, there’s more! The happy couple’s pre-wedding festivities have been a months-long extravaganza that would make Louis XIV look like a minimalist. From fancy parties in London to Mediterranean cruises, the Ambanis have outdone themselves with a wedding celebration that would make even the architect of Versailles blush. It seems the only thing missing was a trip to the moon. Perhaps that’s planned for the honeymoon?

And let’s not forget the “mass wedding” of 50 couples, generously sponsored by the Ambanis. Nothing says “we care” quite like turning your son’s wedding into a reality show spinoff. The lucky couples received a cheque for Rupees 1 lakh, some jewelry, and groceries. One can only hope the groceries included those coveted packets of namkeen.

As the actual wedding day arrives today, we can’t help but wonder: Will the cake be made of gold? Will the flowers be watered with champagne?

This is one wedding that’s sure to go down in history books, fairy tales, and trivia nights alike. Who knows? Maybe “Ambani-level extravagance” will become the new benchmark for over-the-top celebrations. Just don’t forget to bring your own namkeen.
