MALE’ — In a clear sign of strengthening relations in the Indian Ocean, the Maldives and India have launched formal negotiations on a free trade agreement aimed at significantly boosting commerce and investment between the two neighbours.

The breakthrough came during an official visit to New Delhi by the Minister of Economic Development, Transport, and Trade, Mohamed Saeed, who met with his Indian counterpart, Piyush Goyal, the Minister of Commerce and Industry. Minister Saeed undertook the visit at the explicit invitation of the Indian Commerce Minister.

The high-level discussions, described by officials as productive and constructive, focused heavily on cementing a long-term economic partnership. Beyond the free trade pact, the two nations are working towards finalising a Bilateral Investment Treaty and launching several fresh initiatives designed to ease trade barriers and open market access for businesses in both countries.

“We held productive and constructive discussions on advancing the Maldives–India economic partnership,” Minister Saeed said following the meeting, emphasising a shared commitment to translating high-level diplomatic visions into “tangible outcomes” for the mutual benefit of both populations.

The move marks a pragmatic and positive trajectory for the two nations, whose broader relationship has been closely watched by international observers. The talks signal a mutual recognition that economic integration remains a vital pillar of regional stability. According to an official statement from the Ministry of Economic Development, Transport, and Trade, the proposed free trade agreement is expected to enhance market access, lower commercial barriers, and create new avenues for sustainable economic development.

The ministers reaffirmed the longstanding partnership between the Maldives and India. They noted that the current efforts directly reflect an aligned vision between President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to deepen strategic cooperation through practical, mutually beneficial growth.

During the talks, Minister Saeed was accompanied by our High Commissioner to India, Aishath Azeema, alongside senior officials from the Ministry and the High Commission in New Delhi.
