The Maldives Coast Guard has detained two foreign fishing vessels after they were found operating inside the country’s maritime territory. The boats were intercepted at 14:02 on Sunday, about 109 nautical miles off Kela, according to officials.

Authorities said the vessels had crossed into the Maldives’ Special Economic Zone without authorization. Both boats were taken under escort and are being transported to Khudhufushi, where they will be handed over to police for investigation.

The operation comes amid rising concerns over illegal fishing in Maldivian waters. Maritime officials say foreign vessels continue to test the boundaries of the country’s EEZ, prompting more frequent patrols.

The Coast Guard did not release details about the crews or the countries of origin. Officials said further information will be disclosed once the investigation progresses.
