MALE’ — The number of confirmed measles cases in the Maldives has reached 15, all within the Greater Male’ region, the Health Protection Agency confirmed on Monday, with four new infections detected over the past week.

The current cluster was first reported on 13 May. The HPA said the virus remains active and is urging the public to cooperate with contact tracing efforts. Anyone contacted by health officials is asked to provide details of recent movements and interactions to help break the chain of transmission.

A targeted vaccination campaign is being prepared for individuals who have not completed the standard two-dose regimen or whose immunisation status is unverified. Current vaccination efforts are focused on close contacts of confirmed cases. The HPA said it is procuring additional vaccine stocks to expand coverage.

Health officials attribute the resurgence to high volumes of international travel, noting that measles cases are rising in many countries globally and in the immediate region. The Maldives has an established vaccination programme requiring doses at nine months and 18 months of age, giving the general population a reasonable level of protection. Unvaccinated individuals and those with compromised immune systems remain at significant risk.

The HPA said anyone experiencing high fever accompanied by a red rash should seek medical attention immediately. People with flu-like symptoms are advised to wear masks in public and avoid crowded areas. Frequent handwashing remains one of the most effective preventive measures.

Symptoms to watch for include high fever, a red skin rash, persistent cough, runny nose and conjunctivitis. Residents are urged to check their vaccination records and ensure both required doses have been completed, particularly those with underlying health conditions.
