Minister of Cities, Local Government and Public Works Adam Shareef Umar says construction of 55 council office buildings financed through contractor funding is progressing on schedule, with all works expected to be completed by the deadline.

Speaking at a press conference at the President’s Office, the minister said several buildings are now nearing completion, while some have already been roofed. All 55 offices are targeted for completion by July, and the minister expressed confidence that the timeline will be met.

He added that furniture and essential fittings for the new buildings will be sourced from China, noting that the shipments are arranged in a way that will avoid any delays once construction is finished.

“We are very confident that the work of the council offices will be completed by the scheduled date,” he said.

The minister also highlighted that the new, more spacious council buildings will create better working environments and open up improved facilities for Women’s Development Committees.

A total of 105 islands are set to receive new council office buildings. Of these, 55 are being built under RCC contractor finance, while the remaining 50 will be constructed through grant assistance from the Chinese government. The minister said the partnership reflects the strong development cooperation between Maldives and China, particularly in community‑level infrastructure.
