MALE’ — The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment is preparing to launch solar energy installations across 24 islands that will generate more than 50 megawatts of renewable electricity, in one of the largest clean energy expansions the country has undertaken.
The work falls under the Aspire and Arise projects and forms a central part of the government’s push to reduce the Maldives’ dependence on imported fuel for electricity generation. The ministry said the project will lower energy costs across affected islands and significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has set a target of generating 33 percent of the country’s electricity from renewable sources by 2028. The ministry described the current project as a critical step toward reaching that goal.
Solar installations will be established on islands across the northern and southern atolls. The ministry said the reduction in fuel imports will produce both economic and environmental benefits for the country, which currently spends heavily on diesel to power island electricity grids.
