Meemu atoll Raiymandhoo residents have been informed that 44 plots have now been allocated for their relocation to K. Thulusdhoo island, marking a significant step in resolving a long‑standing issue for the community.
The Housing Ministry sent an official letter to the Raiymandhoo Council on Wednesday confirming the allocation. The letter said the ministry will take the necessary steps to move the process forward.
Raiymandhoo, with a population of around 300 people, has faced internal differences over relocation for several years. Last year, views among residents were divided, and President Dr Mohamed Muizzu visited the island in September to listen directly to the concerns and hopes of the community. A petition was also submitted to the President by those who wished to move to another island.
President Muizzu has repeatedly said he aims to resolve the differences of opinion and find a solution that respects the wishes of the people while ensuring long‑term stability for the island.
The government is also addressing similar population challenges in other islands. Due to declining numbers, the administration has decided to relocate the people of Hirimaradhoo island to Hanimaadhoo, a decision announced by President Muizzu in August last year.
Relocation of people from one island to another due to environmental degradation, including island erosion and other natural causes, is a long‑established policy in the Maldives. Several islands have been relocated in the past for these reasons, and more recently some communities were moved after the 2004 tsunami as part of national efforts to ensure safety and long‑term resilience.
