President Dr Mohammed Muizzu has initiated a major reshaping of his administration, accepting the resignations of ten cabinet ministers in what the President’s Office described as a step to strengthen governance and reinforce public confidence following this month’s local council elections.
The decision marks one of the most extensive cabinet adjustments in recent years. It follows the President’s pledge to make the changes needed to align the government’s work with the expectations of the people. Officials familiar with the matter said the President aims to bring renewed energy into key sectors as the administration enters the next phase of its term.
The ministers who resigned today are:
- Minister of Defence, Mohammed Ghassan Maumoon
• Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Abdulla Khaleel
• Minister of Health, Abdullah Nazim Ibrahim
• Minister of Tourism and Environment, Thoriq Ibrahim
• Minister of Social and Family Development, Dr Aishath Shiham
• Minister of Dhivehi Language, Culture and Heritage, Adam Naseer
• Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare, Dr Maryam Mariya
• Minister of Youth Empowerment, Information and Arts, Ibrahim Waheed
• Minister of Cities, Local Government and Public Works, Adam Shareef
• Minister of Higher Education, Labour and Skills Development, Dr Ali Haider
Several of those who stepped down had performed strongly in their portfolios and in their constituencies during the recent elections. Senior officials noted that some may return to the cabinet once the new structure is finalised.
In a statement, the President’s Office said the ministers submitted their resignations to allow for the positive changes the President intends to introduce as part of his commitment to govern in line with the people’s wishes. The President expressed his appreciation for their service.
Alongside the cabinet changes, the President has also begun reviewing the leadership of major state‑owned companies. Managing directors of several companies were dismissed over the past week. Officials said this forms part of the President’s broader effort to ensure that state institutions operate at the highest standard and remain accountable.
The restructuring signals a decisive moment for the administration as it responds to the message delivered by voters earlier this month. The President has said he will continue taking the steps required to strengthen the government’s work and maintain public trust.
