MALE’ — President Mohamed Muizzu has congratulated Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on becoming the longest-serving consecutive prime minister in India’s history, surpassing a record held by the country’s first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, for more than six decades.
Modi passed the milestone after serving 4,399 consecutive days in office, one more than the 4,398 days Nehru served between 1952 and 1964. Modi took office on 26 May 2014, won a second term in 2019, and began a third in June 2024.
President Muizzu posted his congratulations on X, saying the Maldives would always prioritise strengthening its relationship with India on the basis of mutual respect, sovereign equality, and the shared interests of both countries.
The message is notable for its tone. Muizzu came to office in 2023 on a platform that included a harder line toward India, and his early months in power were marked by friction between Male’ and New Delhi. The warm congratulatory post signals continued efforts to steady that relationship.
