MALE’, Maldives — In an address marking the Maldives’ 60th Independence Day, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu vowed to safeguard every inch of the nation’s territory, emphasizing that Maldivians themselves will shoulder the responsibility of defending their homeland. The speech, delivered at a historic joint ceremonial gathering of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) and the Maldives Police Service (MPS) — the first such address by a president — underscored the government’s unwavering focus on national security.

Speaking to the assembled forces, President Muizzu acknowledged questions raised about the government’s prioritization of its defense and police services. He defended the emphasis, noting the vast maritime expanse of the Maldives, a nation of scattered islands with a modest population. “A nation must always remain prepared to protect its people,” he said, stressing that Maldivians will lead the charge in securing their territory. While acknowledging the need for international cooperation to access certain resources and technical expertise,

President Muizzu was firm in asserting the Maldives’ autonomy. “It is not the policy of this government to allow any foreign country to take the lead in our national affairs,” he declared, striking a balance between partnership and independence. The president paid homage to the national heroes whose sacrifices secured the nation’s independence, urging citizens to honor their legacy and take up the shared duty of preserving sovereignty for future generations.

Reflecting on the nation’s history, he expressed deep gratitude to the MNDF and MPS for their steadfast service, particularly during rare moments when the country’s independence faced threats. President Muizzu reaffirmed that strengthening the MNDF and MPS remains a top priority, describing it as both a matter of national pride and a profound responsibility. The address, delivered with a tone of resolve, signaled the government’s commitment to bolstering its security apparatus while navigating the challenges of a geopolitically sensitive region. As the Maldives celebrates six decades of independence, the president’s words resonated as a call to unity and vigilance, reinforcing the nation’s determination to chart its own course in an increasingly complex world.
