With the Maldives entering one of its busiest political cycles in recent years, the Presidential Youth Advisory Board is hosting a community BBQ in Hulhumalé Phase 2 as part of its effort to keep young voters engaged in the national conversation.
The “Youth for Parliament” BBQ will take place on Thursday, 26 March, from 17:30 to 19:00 at the Phase 2 BBQ area. Organisers say the gathering is meant to create an open space for young people to meet, talk and reflect on the choices ahead, as council elections, Women’s Development Committee elections and a national referendum all converge within weeks.
This year’s referendum — on whether to hold the presidential and parliamentary elections on the same day — is now only ten days away. Youth turnout is expected to play a decisive role, and political actors have been quick to recognise that reality.

The ruling PNC has launched its own voter‑education and awareness drive aimed at younger audiences, releasing songs and short videos designed to energise supporters and familiarise first‑time voters with the referendum process. The campaign has been visible across social media platforms, where youth engagement is highest.
While the Youth Advisory Board’s BBQ is not tied to any party campaign, it arrives at a moment when political messaging, cultural events and community‑level outreach are all intensifying. Youth groups, student networks and local councils have been organising discussions and informal meet‑ups across Malé and the atolls, reflecting a broader push to bring younger voices into the electoral process.
With multiple votes approaching and the referendum deadline drawing near, Thursday’s BBQ is one of several youth‑focused activities shaping the final stretch of a decisive election season.
