Yumnu Flown to Malaysia, Family Rallies in Fundraising Effort

Hawa Yumnu Rasheed, who was seriously injured after falling from a building, has been flown to Malaysia for further treatment, after an outpouring of public support helped her family raise additional funds for her care.

Yumnu had been receiving treatment in the intensive care unit of Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) in Malé before the transfer. Her family, some of whom reside in Malaysia, had pushed for her to be moved overseas in hopes of better medical options.

The government, through the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA), stepped in to assist by offering air tickets for 12 people and a grant of $25,000. However, the family said the amount fell short of the costs they were facing.

In response, Shehnaz Moosa, a family acquaintance, launched a live fundraising drive on TikTok around 4:30 p.m. local time. Others quickly followed suit on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. By midnight, Shehnaz announced that MVR 735,367.16 — approximately $47,700 — had been raised with the funds deposited into accounts belonging to Yumnu’s sisters.

The family has expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support that made her treatment possible.
