MALÉ — The government has initiated a sweeping effort to resolve chronic traffic gridlock and parking shortages in the Malé region by designating the area as a controlled vehicle registration zone under a newly finalized master plan.

The overhaul is spearheaded by the newly established Greater Malé Transport and Mobility Office, created on July 12 under the purview of the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade.

Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed announced that the master plan was completed within 90 days of transport mandates being transferred to his ministry. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has prioritized swift action to curb vehicle proliferation and resolve parking deficits across the capital region, Saeed said.

The government is currently working to secure statutory authority for the mobility office. Under the new framework, the Malé region will operate under strict registration controls backed by an 11-sector collaborative strategy.

“This requires a whole-of-government approach,” Minister Saeed explained, noting that the initiative involves a governing board coordinating across multiple agencies, including the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade, the Maldives Police Service, the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Technology, the Ministry of Infrastructure, the Housing Development Corporation (HDC), and the Malé City Council.

To ensure long-term viability, the reform package combines legislative adjustments, digitalization efforts, public awareness campaigns, and traffic flow optimization. Plans include deploying automated license plate recognition technology, establishing a joint traffic management office with traffic police, and developing diverse parking models to alleviate space constraints. Officials maintain that these integrated measures will deliver a comprehensive, permanent solution to the region’s transport crisis.
