Male’ — President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu departed for Malaysia on Sunday morning, marking his first official visit to the country. The trip, at the invitation of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, underscores the deepening ties between the two nations.
President Muizzu, addressing the media before departing for Malaysia, vowed to remain impartial in the investigation into the tragic incident of a woman who fell from a roof on April 18. In a somber statement, he described the incident as deeply saddening and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to justice and equality as its foremost priority. “No one is above the law in the eyes of justice,” President Muizzu declared, emphasizing his determination to see the perpetrators identified and punished. To ensure a thorough inquiry, he has announced the formation of an independent presidential commission, endowed with broad authority to investigate without obstruction or limitation on whom it may question. President Muizzu pledged full transparency, insisting he would neither conceal facts nor be swayed by external pressures, and would answer solely to the public. The commission, he said, is expected to deliver answers swiftly, as the nation awaits clarity on the circumstances of the tragedy.
During his visit, President Muizzu is expected to hold high-level talks with Mr. Anwar, focusing on strengthening bilateral cooperation, discussing regional and global issues, and exploring new partnerships. The leaders will oversee the signing of several Memoranda of Understanding and Exchange of Notes, signaling collaboration in key sectors.
A business forum, organized by the Ministry of Economic Development, will provide President Muizzu an opportunity to engage with prominent Malaysian investors. He is also scheduled to deliver a lecture at the International Islamic University of Malaysia titled “Intellectual Renaissance: Unveiling the Scientific and Modern Development of Islamic Civilization.”
In a nod to the Maldivian diaspora, the president will meet with community members living in Malaysia, reaffirming his commitment to their welfare. He is accompanied by a delegation of cabinet ministers and senior officials, including Foreign Minister Dr. Abdullah Khaleel, Defense Minister Mohammed Ghassan Maumoon, Finance Minister Moosa Zameer, Economic Minister Mohammed Saeed, Home Minister Ali Ihsan, Education Minister Dr. Ismail Shafeeu, Higher Education Minister Dr. Ali Haider, Islamic Minister Dr. Mohammed Shaheem Ali Saeed, and Attorney General Ahmed Usham.
The visit aims to strengthen ties between the Maldives and Malaysia, focusing on cooperation and support for Maldivians abroad.
