In a historic leap for gender equality in the domain of underwater exploration, Zoona Naseem, an esteemed diver with 28 years of experience, is making waves as a beacon of inspiration. The Maldives, renowned for its stunning aquatic beauty, now witnesses a groundbreaking moment as Zoona takes the task of training the first batch of fishermen as rescue divers. She is a consultant selected by the Ministry of Fisheries. There are five other consultants.

At the inauguration ceremony of the Fishermen’s Rescue Diver Training Program, Zoona expressed her elation, stating, “It’s a very happy day. Actually, as a coach, this is the happiest day I want to see.”

This flagship initiative, championed by President Dr. Muizzu, under the Week 14 roadmap for the government, aims to equip a rescue diver on every fishing boat to address safety concerns in the industry.

Zoona’s passion for diving emerged in 1996 when, after a brief stint in the Ministry of Fisheries and Agriculture, she opted for the untamed allure of the ocean over a desk job. At that time, there were scarce local women professionals in the diving sector, making Zoona a trailblazer in her field.

Reflecting on the necessity of rescue divers, Zoona emphasized the potential dangers fishermen face when diving without adhering to safety standards. “If he has a problem with a dive and treatment is delayed, he could be disabled for the rest of his life. Instead, if he gets the treatment he needs quickly, he has a better chance of surviving,” she articulated.

The rescue diver training program involves comprehensive steps, encompassing open water diving, advanced diving courses, rescue techniques, and a mandatory first aid course. The inaugural group of 25 trainees hails from the islands of GDh. Madhaveli, Gdh. Dehvadhoo, GA. Kolamafushi, and Ga. Villingili, demonstrating the program’s broad reach.

Minister of Fisheries Ahmed Shiyam, himself a professional diver, participated in the training program and underscored President Muizzu’s commitment to fortifying the fishing industry.

Amidst the sea of accomplishments, Zoona’s love for the ocean resonates deeply. Fondly known as “Moodhu Bulha” (cat of the Sea), she runs the Moodhu Bulhaa Dive Centre in Vilimale’, which serves as a PADI training facility offering courses from beginners to professional levels for all ages.

Zoona, whose father is a fisherman, proudly acknowledges that her affinity for the sea is ingrained in her genes. As she guides the first cohort of fishermen into the world of rescue diving, Zoona Naseem stands not only as a testament to women’s capabilities but as a leader forging new depths for the maritime industry.
