Malé — President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced a series of reforms aimed at strengthening judicial independence and accelerating justice delivery, including budgetary autonomy for the courts and new infrastructure for key institutions.
Speaking at the Republic Day ceremony held at the Social Centre, President Muizzu said the judiciary’s operational costs will be fully liberalized under next year’s national budget. A designated percentage of the budget will be allocated directly to the judiciary, with funds managed through a separate account at the Maldives Monetary Authority.
“This will allow the judiciary to spend on its own services without needing daily approvals,” President Muizzu said. “It is a true step toward liberalization.”
The president also called for urgent resolution of cases involving individuals held in pretrial detention. “People should not be left in that state — they have rights,” he said, urging the judiciary to act swiftly.
President Muizzu outlined plans to expand judicial infrastructure, including the construction of a Superior Court complex, a dedicated Criminal Court building, and new space for the Drug Court. He said these efforts are part of a broader push to strengthen judicial services and ensure fair access to justice.
“If any legal amendments are needed to support this process, the government will give its full backing,” he said. “With justice and fairness, I am confident the judiciary will act decisively.”
