Fifty‑two Maldivian farmers have departed for Sri Lanka to take part in an advanced agricultural training program, the largest group yet to travel under such an initiative. The program is organized by the Maldives Agribusiness Program in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock and the International Fund for Agricultural Development.
The training, focused on advanced horticulture, runs until the 13th of this month. Participants will receive instruction on modern greenhouse cultivation and other techniques aimed at improving crop yields.
Those selected for the trip include farmers who completed MAP’s lead‑farmer and senior‑farmer training, as well as recipients of grants under the Agricultural Benefit scheme. MAP has also conducted a series of domestic trainings as part of its broader effort to modernize the sector.
Greenhouses have already been installed in 12 islands, and officials say environmentally friendly farming methods are being introduced across the country.
The ministry said all travel and training expenses are covered through project funding, ensuring that farmers can participate without financial burden.
