MALÉ, – President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that both the new 30-bed hospital and the domestic airport under development in R. Alifushi are officially on track to be finalized and opened next year (2027).
Responding to media inquiries at the President’s Office on Monday, President Muizzu confirmed that the government has structured logistical and financial assistance to accelerate these key infrastructure initiatives.
The upgrade of the Alifushi Health Centre into a fully equipped 30-bed hospital is a 128 million Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR) development project. The state has contracted the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) for its execution. To avoid bureaucratic delays, the president stated that necessary financial support has already been funneled to MTCC to procure and transfer specialized building materials directly to the island, ensuring construction begins shortly.
“Healthcare is one of the highest priorities of this administration,” President Muizzu noted, adding that regional hospital developments have been systematically prioritized based on project scope, with several targeted to finish by mid-2027.
Alifushi Development Blueprint
- 30-Bed Hospital: A MVR 128 million project contracted to MTCC. The mobilization of materials is fully funded, with complete project handover guaranteed for 2027.
- Domestic Airport: Formally integrated into the national aviation strategy via a presidential decree issued on 28 March 2024. Construction will wrap up within the current presidential term.
- Industrial Zone: Future land reclamation around the airport site is earmarked to build a dedicated industrial zone, aimed at boosting local manufacturing and commercial revenue.
- Strategic Outlook: Given Alifushi’s strategic geographic location, the president highlighted the airport as a vital economic catalyst. By combining the airport infrastructure with a newly planned industrial zone, the government intends to expand domestic job opportunities so residents can secure sustainable incomes without migrating away from their home island.
