Budget has been secured to build a brand-new correctional facility in K. Himmafushi, alongside broader expansions in the Malé area, Homeland Security and Technology Minister Ali Ihusan announced.
Speaking as the chief guest at the Maldives Correctional Service’s (MCS) 55th-anniversary ceremony at Hulhumalé Prison, Minister Ihusan detailed sweeping updates aimed at improving working conditions for prison staff. He promised a revamped health insurance scheme, transparent career progression paths, and guaranteed allocations for officers under state housing schemes.
This year’s anniversary fell on the same day as the national holiday. Addressing the gathering, Commissioner of Prisons Hassan Zareer drew a parallel between the historic heroes who defended the Maldives with meager resources and the prison officers working behind the scenes to keep facilities secure.
“We have worked to ease overcrowding and expand capacity across our facilities,” Zareer said, highlighting recent security upgrades that include newly installed body scanners and baggage inspection machines. He also pointed out that officers received a long-awaited salary increase, marking the first structural pay revision since 2015.
The event brought together key state officials, including Deputy Commissioner of Prisons Ahmed Sabah, National Integrity Commission President Shuaib Abdul Rahman, and Inspector of Corrections Aishath Shiuna. The ceremony concluded with a group photo session and a celebratory cake-cutting.
