MALE’ — Billabong International High School and Kangaroo Kids will begin classes at a new campus in Hulhumale’ Phase 2 in January, the operating company announced on Sunday at a groundbreaking ceremony for the site.
The campus is being developed by Islanders Education, a Maldivian company, in partnership with Lighthouse Learning Group, the international education group that operates both school brands. The two companies signed an operations agreement at the ceremony. Classes will begin with pre-school programmes, with Grade 1 and Grade 2 expected to follow later in the year. A new grade level will be added each subsequent year, with further details to be shared with parents shortly.
The groundbreaking was attended by Education Ministry State Minister Dr Ahmed Mohamed, Housing Development Corporation Managing Director Ali Zuhair, Lighthouse Learning Group CEO Prajod Rajan and Islanders Education Chairman Abdul Rasheed.
State Minister Dr Ahmed said the campus would open new opportunities for students and ease the burden on Hulhumale’ families who currently make the daily trips to Male’ for school. He said private sector involvement in education, from companies like Islanders Education, is an important part of developing the sector.
Islanders Education Executive Director Ahmed Adly Rasheed said the company’s focus is not on opening as many schools as possible but on contributing to meaningful change in the Maldivian education system, working with governments to bring quality and inclusive education to more students.
Prajod Rajan said the new campus would take education in Hulhumale’ to a higher level, providing students with the learning and assessment environment needed to succeed.
