MALE ‘— A definitive shift in the Maldivian labour landscape has been confirmed, as new data from the Maldives Bureau of Statistics (MBS) reveals that the number of expatriate men in the working-age population now exceeds that of Maldivian men.

The revelation comes as part of the MBS’s latest demographic analysis, released in conjunction with World Population Day. The data estimates the total population of the Maldives at 590,079, with expatriates accounting for 196,024 residents. Of this foreign population, a substantial 174,005 are male.

The statistics highlight a significant concentration of foreign labour within the most productive age brackets. Analysis of the workforce demographics shows a marked surge in the number of expatriate males aged between 20 and 40. This specific age group is critical to the nation’s economic output, and the reliance on foreign labour in this bracket underscores the Maldives’ continued dependency on overseas workers to fuel its major industries, including tourism, construction, and service sectors.

The scale of this shift is underscored by the overall population ratio, with the MBS reporting that one in every three individuals living in the Maldives is now an expatriate.

  • Total Population: 590,079
  • Total Expatriate Population: 196,024
  • Expatriate Male Population: 174,005

For policymakers, these figures present a complex challenge. While the expatriate workforce is essential to maintaining the pace of national development, the concentration of the foreign male workforce in prime working years raises ongoing questions about workforce development, the sustainability of local employment in key sectors, and the long-term demographic balance of the nation.

As the government continues to navigate the complexities of managing a rapidly growing population, the data suggests that the integration and management of the expatriate labour force will remain a central pillar of national economic strategy.
