President Dr Mohammed Muizzu cast his vote this morning for the local council elections, the Women’s Development Committee elections and for the referendum.
The President voted at the polling station in Thaajuddeen School, accompanied by his daughter. After casting his ballot, he spoke briefly to journalists and urged the public to take part in today’s vote.
“I urge all the people to participate in today’s vote to exercise their legal rights,” he said.
The First Lady also cast her votes earlier in the morning. Polling for the three votes began at 8am: the local council elections, the Women’s Development Committee elections and the referendum on synchronising presidential and parliamentary elections.
A total of 1,592 candidates are contesting the local council elections, while 1,368 candidates are standing for the Women’s Development Committee elections.
According to the Election Commission, 299,876 people are eligible to vote, including 144,506 women and 150,370 men. Voters will elect representatives to 1,356 posts across 225 constituencies in local councils and WDCs.
The EC has printed 888,845 ballot papers for the three votes. This includes 297,959 papers for the local council elections, 292,706 for the WDC elections and 298,180 for the referendum.
